German Attorney General (Generalbundesanwalt, we like the word for it and we mention it) Harald Range has dropped the investigation into spying on German Chancellor Angela Dorothea Merkel's cellphone, as the allegations cannot be proven by "valid legal means."
In October 2013, media reports reported that the US National Security Agency (NSA) was monitoring several telephone devices. One of them was Angela Merkel's device.
The documents leaked by Edward Snowden “do not contain evidence that proves surveillance and can stand up in a court of law,” Range said, adding that efforts to gather more evidence from the NSA have failed (sic).
The investigation failed due to the fact that the Edward Snowden documents that were the only evidence of the violations do not constitute real evidence for the Germans, as their origin cannot be proven.
Range tried to get the information he needed directly from the NSA (!), but as expected the US was not helpful. Without this cooperation, the investigation came to a halt.
According to a press release from the White House (in 2013), the NSA “does not and would not monitor Chancellor Merkel’s communications.”.
What else could the White House mention in its statement?
