Google Inc. is preparing to announce its new wireless Internet service in the United States, putting more pressure on Internet distribution companies, an industry that is notoriously price-locked.
Google may announce this new service as early as today, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal .
The WSJ, citing anonymous sources, says the service will only charge customers for the data they use. The service will only be available for now, for users of the company's latest Nexus 6 smartphones, the Journal reports.
The project has been in preparation for two years, and is part of the company's broader effort to make the Internet more accessible around the world.
Google currently has an extremely high-speed Internet network and distributes it to homes in some select cities.
To facilitate its wireless services, Google has reportedly struck deals with Sprint and T-Mobile's networks, according to the WSJ.
