RapidShare is taking a hit

Swiss file hosting company RapidShare is shutting down on March 31st after nearly 12 years in business. For those who remember, the company was a favorite warez file sharing service since its inception.RapidShare Logo

However, legal problems forced it to “clean” its servers of illegal files, and change the reward system it used. The company offered a bonus to the uploader every time someone downloaded their file.

After all this, the hackers started leaving the company, and its managers thought about turning to Cloud services.

It seems that the company's attempt in recent years to remain a cloud storage service was unsuccessful. Many different companies such as Dropbox, Google and Microsoft offer online storage space for personal use at much lower prices.

For comparison, RapidShare charges about $680 per year for 300GB of cloud storage. Dropbox charges $99 per year for 1TB.
