Apple users who think they are immune to viruses have something new to deal with. Malware built for Mac OS X, which exploits Apple's operating systems to attack iOS devices, namely iPhones and iPads.
The malware was discovered by security firm Palo Alto Networks, which named it “WireLurker” because it lurks around the corner for devices running iOS, Apple’s mobile operating system.
Once it detects a USB connection to a Mac laptop or desktop, the malware attacks. The software begins downloading third-party apps, specifically from Mac OS X app stores in China – and adds malicious code to legitimate iOS apps. The attacks have so far been detected in China and appear to be limited there.
The threat is new to Apple, although this type of attack has been known since 2003, according to Ryan Olson, director of intelligence at Palo Alto Networks' Unit 42.
“Unlike most iOS threats, WireLurker is not limited to jailbroken iPhones and iPads, but also attacks those that have never been jailbroken.”
