Seagate introduces first 8TB hard drives

When Western Digital announced its new 6TB drives, we should have expected Seagate. The company has announced its first 8TB drives.
Don't expect to see them on retail shelves, though, as they're not intended for the general public.

Seagate 8TB Hard Drives

Their price, which will probably be quite high, has not been disclosed yet.

These hard drives are ideal for cloud servers and data centers. Even if the systems use SSDs for incoming and outgoing communications, the bulk of the data, such as backups and the like, will be able to use 8TB platters.

The 8 TB drives will have the same number of platters as the 6 TB units (5 platters). Only the data density will be much higher than before.
