The first half of 2014 saw the most DDoS attacks

According to Arbor Networks, during the first half of 2014, more than 100 DDoS attacks exceeding 100GB/sec were recorded.

The data was collected by Arbor Networks ' ATLAS threat monitoring system , a collaboration between 300 service provider customers who share anonymized traffic data with Arbor.

ATLAS collects statistics corresponding to 90TB/sec of Internet traffic and provides data for the Digital Attack Map, a map of all attacks on global traffic and created in collaboration with Google Ideas.

Key findings of ATLAS during the first half of 2014:
  • The first half of 2014 saw the most volumetric DDoS attacks ever, with more than 100 reports of attacks exceeding 100GB/sec so far
  • In the middle of 2014, attacks exceeding 20GB/sec doubled compared to the whole of 2013
  • The largest attack recorded in the second quarter was on the order of 154.69 GB/sec, reduced by 101% compared to the first quarter of 2014. More specifically, this was a reflection attack on the NTP protocol that was observed in Spain
  • Reflection attacks on NTP protocols are still significant, but their size and scope have decreased compared to the first quarter of 2014. The average NTP traffic volume is decreasing worldwide, but has not yet returned to the levels of November 2013 (before NTP attacks began to multiply)
  • The second quarter of 2014 saw fewer large attacks – with the average size of these decreasing by 47% compared to the first quarter of 2014
