Amazon plans to jump into the mobile market with the launch of a new smartphone device in the second half of the year.
According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the American company has already presented the device to app developers in San Francisco and Seattle. Amazon's plans include announcing the smartphone in June and launching it in markets around the end of September, so that it will be fully available during the December holiday season.
It's worth noting that rumors of a smartphone from Amazon have been circulating for years, without ever making an official announcement. However, the company has gained significant market share in the hardware market, especially in the United States, with the Kindle e-reader/tablet, and more recently, the Fire TV, a $99 video streaming device.
If the rumors and the report are confirmed, Amazon will have to compete with companies that dominate this market such as Apple and Samsung. At the same time, it will have to compete with companies that are experiencing rapid development on a global level such as Huawei and Lenovo.
The company has gained significant shares in the hardware market, especially in the United States, with the Kindle e-reader/tablet.
With such intense competition, Amazon, according to the Wall Street Journal, will strongly wish to “differentiate” its device. Thus, its plans include equipping the future smartphone with four retina-tracking technology cameras, which will be able to project 3D images without requiring the use of accompanying glasses. In fact, an earlier publication had claimed that the image would be projected in front of the screen, in the form of a hologram.
