Microsoft for launched its Office suite of apps iPad just devices a week ago, but the company says the app has already been downloaded 12 million times.
Office for iPad is available for free download so that users can read or view document files without any hindrance.
However, users who wish to create or modify files in applications such as Word, Excel, or PowerPoint will need to obtain an Office 365 subscription. The only exception to the above is the OneNote application.
The announcement from Microsoft was made via Twitter, without specifying what percentage of the 12 million downloads are paid subscriptions to the suite.
In a related clarification question from Engadget, a Microsoft spokesperson said that the company is satisfied with the public's interest in Office for iPad, without however providing further clarification.
As CNet notes, the announcement of Office for iPad was a calculated risk for Microsoft in the hope that iPad users would prefer the company's comprehensive suite over other free offerings, such as Google Docs or Apple's iWorks.
