Fujitsu is planning to integrate its innovative palm scanning method into smartphones. Currently, palm scanners are built into laptops and tablets.
This is the PalmSecure developed by the Japanese company, which uses infrared to scan the veins located under the surface of the user's palm.
Notably, the sensor requires blood flow in the veins to function. Fujitsu claims that this biometric technology has a false acceptance rate of just 0.00008% and a false rejection rate of 0.01%.
If the above sounds a bit like science fiction scenarios, Fujitsu refutes them, as it first used this technology in ATMs of the Japanese bank Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, as early as 2004. This was followed by the installation of PalmSecure scanners in Suruga Bank branches, also in 2004.
The Japanese company then further developed the technology to make it smaller and able to be installed initially in laptops, but also in tablets. The portable version of the palm scanners has already been installed in 2,000 tablets supplied by Fukuoka Financial Group, for the needs of its executives.
The 12.5-inch Fujitsu Arrows Q704/H tablet integrates an Intel Core i5 processor and runs the Windows operating system, while it can also function as a virtual desktop computer.
With this device, bank executives can be at the customer's premises and carry out banking transactions with complete security. Moreover, these tablets can only be used by authorized executives.
As a Fujitsu representative told Computer World, no one currently possesses the relevant technology, which is clearly more secure than simple fingerprint scanning.
In fact, he revealed that several Japanese banks were interested in the palm scanner as a means of authenticating individuals after natural disasters, when other identification documents may have been lost or destroyed.
The next step in development will be to further miniaturize the infrared sensor, which is currently the size of a postage stamp.
This will make it possible to place the palm recognition sensor on smartphones, although no timetable or agreement has been announced for the devices that could integrate PalmSecure.
