The launch of the YotaPhone, the dual-screen smartphone, caused a sensation when it was launched late last year. YotaDevices, the manufacturer of the device, is apparently not resting on its laurels and has already announced the improved second-generation YotaPhone.
The new YotaPhone is already in the prototype stage and incorporates significant improvements to the flaws identified in the original model. Now, the second screen, using E-Ink technology, is now a full touchscreen, which also means increased functionality.
With this specific upgrade, the user will now be able to avoid the main, energy-hungry screen and turn to E-Ink for managing calls, messages, emails, browsing the Internet, etc. The secondary screen now has a diagonal of 4.7 inches and is characterized as "always-on".
The main screen of the new device will have a diagonal of 5 inches, will be AMOLED technology and will offer a resolution of 1080p. Inside the device is the Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.3GHz, replacing the Snapdragon 600 of the previous model. The device has also become significantly thinner, reaching 8.9 millimeters.
YotaDevices has also made the SDK (application development kit) available to any interested developer to proceed with the creation of applications that can take advantage of the existence of the second, E-Ink, screen.
At the same time, the company is in talks with companies like Google and Amazon to make these applications compatible.
The refreshed YotaPhone is expected to be available in the markets of Russia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa from the fourth quarter of 2014, with the United States and Asian markets to follow later.
The device is expected to cost 499 euros, the same as the original, while owners of the original model will receive a generous discount.
