Probably most of you do not know the program Pidgin, although you should. It is a free, open-source program that runs on Windows, Linux, Ubuntu, MacOSX and can gather all your chat applications into one.
It accepts data from the chat networks AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber/XMPP, MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, IRC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, Lotus Sametime, SILC, SIMPLE, MXit, MySpaceIM, and Zephyr, so you have all of these in a single window. And in addition, with the installation of a plugin, it also accepts the Skype network.
But beyond the convenience, that is, having all your chats gathered in one program, it speaks Greek and is super secure since it is open source, and has third-party plugins that increase its security. An example is the OTR (Off the record messaging) plugin which encrypts all your conversations between you and a contact, resulting in the intermediary (say, Google chat) seeing encrypted text.
In the new version 2.10.8, Pidgin fixes about 20 user comments, and makes several improvements. A problem that existed with Facebook chat when connecting via XMPP was not fixed, but the company urges us to wait a little longer.
