The CentOS distribution is the community proposal for an Enterprise-grade distribution. CentOS 7, like every other version of the distribution, is based entirely on the Red Hat Enterprise source code and is aimed at those interested in running a RedHat Enterprise-compatible distribution, but who do not need the support offered by Red Hat.
The distribution is LTS, meaning it is supported for many years, which makes it ideal for server environments or for those who want a stable and reliable operating system.
So today Karanbir Singh announced the release of CentOS 7.3 1611. The new version is derived from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.3 and offers several new features, such as SHA2 support in OpenLDAP, Bluetooth LE, and a Btrfs technology preview.
“With the release of 1503 CentOS-7 can report bugs directly to bugs.centos.org. You can find information about this feature on this page. Several new packages include:
python-gssapi, python-netifaces, mod_auth_openidc, pidgin, and Qt5. Support for 7th generation i3, i5, and i7 Intel processors 6th generation I2C.”
Several packages have been updated. Some of them are: amba, squid, systemd, krb5, gcc-libraries, binutils, gfs-utils, libreoffice, GIMP, SELinux, firewalld, libreswan, tomcat and open-vm-tools
