The UK could soon be a dangerous place for people who frequent torrent sites. The Intellectual Property has called for a tougher approach to online filesharing, suggesting that pirates should be thrown in jail immediately.
According to TorrentFreak , the proposal came during the second reading of the Copyright Bill in the House of Commons. The bill seeks to update copyright law.
During the meeting, Google's name was mentioned several times, as members of parliament accused the internet company of not policing the internet and refusing to address a series of takedown requests.
We remind you that in 2013, Google received 235 million DMCA requests and only 21 million of them were rejected.
When the debate turned to the issue of file sharing, John Leech, a member of the British Parliament, called for the maximum penalty for digital infringement to be increased to 10 years in prison from the current two years. Other members of the group, however, were more restrained in their views. Elen Goodman, for example, said it was important to separate teenagers who download a few files from the businesses that made billions of pounds from providing illegal material.
