Google has confirmed the acquisition of Wimm Labs, a company that made smartwatches , GigaOm reports. The company initially created an Android app platform for wristwatches. However, it eventually released its own smartwatch , which it called the Wimm One.
About a year ago, Wimm Labs ceased operations and posted the following message on its website:
“During the summer of 2012, Wimm Labs entered into an exclusive, confidential partnership and discontinued sales of the Developer Preview Kit. We would like to thank all of our developers for their interest and willingness to experiment with our platform and look forward to seeing the exciting developments in the market.”
Although there was some speculation that Apple may have been involved, it was ultimately Google that snapped up the company, GigaOm reports.
Google's acquisition of the company was facilitated by Woodside Capital Partners, and there are reports that some of Wimm's staff will work at Google. Most of Wimm still have their personal LinkedIn profiles showing that they work for Wimm. A Google spokesperson confirmed the acquisition on Friday afternoon.
