Almost two weeks ago, Samsung announced its intention to recall over 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, but it seems the Galaxy Note 7 isn't the only Samsung device to have issues with overheating batteries.
The Sun reported that a Samsung Galaxy S7 caught fire in a public place in Witham, Essex. The smartphone's owner, Sarah Crockett, and her husband Matt were in a busy cafe when the phone suddenly caught fire.
The device was purchased three months ago and strangely, it wasn't charging when the incident occurred. There have been seventy reported cases of Galaxy Note 7 smartphones catching fire in the US and in many of these incidents, the smartphones caught fire while charging. The Galaxy S7 in question started to overheat and then started to smoke.
The cafe filled with smoke and the owner of the device jumped out of her chair away from the phone. Unfortunately, she will not be able to recover her data from the smartphone. The photos of her 7-year-old son's first day of school are gone. However, she has already contacted the company's customer service department.
A spokesperson said, “There are no known security issues with Galaxy S7 devices. This issue is currently under investigation and customer service is in contact with the customer regarding the issue.” It’s certainly positive that Samsung has stepped in and is handling the issue, but it’s quite concerning that these types of reports continue to surface.
Just a few days ago, a Galaxy S7 edge device exploded in its owner's pocket, causing second and third degree burns. The owner is suing Samsung. Another case was reported earlier this month, when a Samsung Galaxy S7 edge caught fire while charging and fortunately, did not cause any harm to its owner.
