Google finally found a name for its latest Android operating system, Android Nougat, and engineers took the opportunity to hold an AMA ("Ask Me Anything") session on Reddit.
In the AMA, Android engineers took questions from Redditors from all over the world about the upcoming Android Nougat release. While most of the questions were about the board and politics, there were also a few disgruntled voices.
Night Mode in Android Nougat
Night mode has been a hot topic on smartphones ever since Apple introduced its own Night Shift feature in iOS 9. Google engineers explained that while night mode was something that was being considered for Android Nougat, Google decided not to include it at the last minute. The reason was that they simply felt that the feature wasn't ready for prime time and that there were still issues, particularly battery life, that needed to be addressed.
Java
Many Redditors asked Google engineers about Java as the core programming language for Android. Google engineers responded that Android isn't really capable of switching languages right now, even if they're based on Java. Google still strongly believes in the language, at least to the extent that it's useful for Android, and will continue to develop and support it.
Android fragmentation
The issue of fragmentation has also come to the fore, especially in light of Android's availability for more devices than smartphones and tablets. Google engineers said the support library includes many new features for other, older versions of Android.
Bug reports
Google engineers assured Redditors that they have a fully trained team sifting through the bugs to find the real ones from the false positives or those that have already been fixed.
Android Nougat OEM Release
Almost all rom Redditors had a common question. When will the Android Nougat OEM version be released? Google engineers didn't answer it!
