Something is going on with TeamViewer's servers and all indications point to a massive breach that has led many users to take to Reddit and complain about their computers being hacked, while some others report seeing new purchases in their PayPal accounts.
The problems began around noon yesterday, when users were unable to connect to the TeamViewer network. A few hours later, the company's website went down, but the team managed to get it back online within a few hours.
On Twitter, the TeamViewer team wrote that they were only experiencing problems in certain parts of their network, but denied any security breach, at least on their part.
Some users reported finding new transactions in PayPal and bank accounts, while others discovered that someone was looking into their email account.
Some lucky users said they only narrowly avoided being hacked at the last minute, noticing that their mouse started moving all over the screen, and hastily disconnected from the Internet.
In recent months, we have seen malware use TeamViewer many times to infect computers, but most of these cases were due to users using weak passwords, which is definitely not TeamViewer's fault.
Some of these cases include Surprise ransomware, a new type of scam impersonating tech support, and the more recent BackDoor.TeamViewer.49 trojan that loads TeamViewer in order to create a Web proxy on infected computers.
What's strange this time is that it was only when the TeamViewer servers went down that many users took to social media to complain that they had been hacked. This is either a huge weird cosmic coincidence or TeamViewer is really at fault and won't be able to pin the blame on its users.
According to Softpedia, TeamViewer said it will make a statement once it manages to bring its entire network back online.
