Home-made Open Source Ransomware Destroys Your Files! Beware!

Hidden Tear ransomware was detected by Turkish security group Otku Sen. This ransomware affects users by encrypting their files and 'losing' the encryption key – thus rendering all files unrecoverable.

This code was added to Github to entice developers to save time on creating their own ransomware code using this code. Hidden Tear contains a cryptographic flaw that could allow someone to decrypt files later if they ever use its code.

In the past, the creator of Hidden Tear has stated:

While it may be useful for some, there are significant risks involved. Hidden tear can only be used for educational purposes. Do not use it as ransomware! You could go to jail for obstruction of justice just by running Hidden tear, even if you are completely innocent.

Users who downloaded this update will see the file execute immediately after the download is complete, and it is only a matter of minutes for the entire system to be infected with a crypto-ransomware that encrypts most of their data files.

This is not the first time that a poorly encrypted ransomware incident has occurred. Last November, a version of the Power Worm ransomware managed to steal users' encryption keys, permanently locking their files.
