The American Carnegie Mellon University has recently been working on the development of Skin Buttons , a groundbreaking technology consisting of tiny projectors that allow users who use a smartwatch to project icons onto their skin , essentially turning their hand into a fully functional touchscreen .
The icons displayed through the high-tech Skin Buttons technology are touch sensitive and essentially what they achieve is to extend the smartwatch screen to the user's hand. In this ingenious way, one of the biggest obstacles of smartwatches is overcome, which is none other than their small screens, as despite the diligent efforts of manufacturers, the vast majority of today's smart watches have a small display, which does not particularly help in performinga series of functions (such as entering text). The peculiarity of the Skin Buttons technology is that the smartwatch essentially understands where the user is pressing and executes the corresponding command. At first glance, the technology developed by Carnegie Mellon University seems to have come out of a science fiction movie and the truth is that at the moment it is a prototype that still requires many steps to be completed. If nothing else, however, Skin Buttons is the only solution that seems capable of solving forever the problem of the small display that necessarily exists in most smartwatches.
