Facebook and Apple are planning to fund egg freezing for female employees, allowing them to delay having children. Facebook has already started funding the program since January. Google will follow suit on January 1, 2015.
Adding egg freezing funding is not a common practice among employers in the United States. As a spokesperson for Eggbanxx explains to Mashable.com, this is because egg freezing was only considered experimental two years ago and was primarily aimed at cancer patients.
There is much talk about the probability of successful fertilization of frozen eggs (Mashable cites a study that states 25%) as well as the cost of preserving them: from $10,000 for the procedure and at least $500 a year for their storage. Apple and Facebook will cover the related costs up to $20,000, NBCNews.com reported
