It's no secret that Microsoft has invested millions of dollars to make Windows 8.1 more popular and to convince users to upgrade not only from Windows 8, but also from older versions of its operating system.
The adoption of Microsoft's new operating system seems to be going quite well, especially over the last year.
According to data from research firm StatCounter, Windows 8.1 has increased its market share, but this percentage is not enough to surpass some of the previous versions of Windows, such as the infamous Vista.
Windows 7 dominates, capturing 55.01 percent of the market – as of September 2013 – August 2014 – while Windows XP follows with 18.43 percent. Mac OS X is the third most popular operating system, with 8.2 percent.
Most worryingly, however, is that despite Microsoft's efforts to bring Windows 8.1 to the forefront, Windows Vista continues to have more users.
Windows Vista is considered one of Microsoft's biggest operating system failures, yet it still holds 4.19 percent of the market, while Windows 8.1 powers just 3.87 percent of desktops worldwide. Windows 8, however, is doing much better, with a 7.83 percent share.
