Beware! “Private video” infects computers with malware

computer crime

Security researchers have identified a new online scam that exploits human curiosity in order to lure potential victims to malicious sites.

A specially designed website that promises access to a "private" video, which is reportedly not intended for mass viewing, may pique users' curiosity.

In this particular case, however, it is a well‑crafted trap, which is being set up by cybercrime criminals.

The transition to this website, which resembles a Youtube, is achieved primarily through social networking sites and through specially designed posts.

According to researcher Cristopher Boyd of Malwarebytes, when navigating to this specific website, users are informed that Flash Player has crashed and that a program update is required to view the video, or alternatively the users' age verification.

Depending on what they choose, the victims are transferred to a corresponding website, which infects computers with malware or asks users to complete an online survey – for financial benefit to the scammers.

Users are urged to be especially cautious while browsing the internet, and not to be lured by posts and websites that promise access to unique content, requiring the installation of any programs.
