Among the 500 most powerful computers in the world is now a Greek supercomputer, which belongs to the National Foundation for Research and Technology (NHRT) and the Ministry of Education, where it is located.

According to the international Top 500 list that was made public and which is updated every six months, Greece's "super" computer, named "ARIS", is in 468th place. "ARIS" has a processing power of 169.7 Tflop/s, 8,520 cores and bears the signature of IBM.

In first place, for the 5th consecutive time, continues to be the Chinese Tianhe-2 (Galaxy-2), with a power of 33,863 Tflop per second (or 33.86 Petaflop/s or 33.86 quadrillion calculations per second), which has 3,120,000 cores. It is a creation of the National University of Defense Technology of China and is installed at the National Supercomputing Center in Wangzhou.

Following at a distance in 2nd place is the American Titan, from the US Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, with 17,590 Tflop/s and 560,640 cores.

It is noteworthy that for the first time in the top ten (in 7th place) a supercomputer from the Middle East entered the list, which is located at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia.

Overall, of the 500 most powerful computers in the world, most (233) are located in the US, 141 in Europe and 108 in Asia. Most supercomputers are manufactured by the American companies HP (36%), IBM (22%) and Cray (14%). The total power of the 500 "monsters" reaches 363 Pflop/s.
