OnePlus' cable does not support USB Type-C 1.1
USB Type-C is one of the most welcome improvements included in smartphones , but the new feature has yet to become the standard.
Although microUSB is still widely used in smartphones, USB Type-C has made real changes to replace the older technology.
There aren't many smartphones available on the market that use a USB Type-C port, and not even those that have similar technology older than that.
Let's take the OnePlus 2, for example, which doesn't support USB Type-C 1.1, but comes with an older version of the protocol.
Now, if you're going to buy an authentic cable to charge your Nexus device, it should theoretically work.
The cable only works safely with the OnePlus 2
However, Google employee Benson Leung has tested the OnePlus cable and does not recommend that those who have the Nexus 6P and 5X use it with their devices.
"I found that this adapter does not properly charge my Chromebook Pixel and other Type-C devices. My analysis shows that this cable, while it will charge and provide data to the devices, does not properly follow the USB Type-C specification for power delivery recognition.".
“This adapter is advertised as a 3A cable, but that is not correct because it is a socket adapter port,” Benson explains in his Amazon review.
According to him, USB Type-C uses USB 2.0 and not USB 3.1, so even if the phone supports USB Type-C 1.0, it is not compatible with USB Type-C 1.1.
In conclusion, OnePlus accessories will only work with the OnePlus 2 and not with Google's Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, or the Chromebook Pixel
“By using this cable, your phone, tablet, or laptop may attempt to draw 3A, which may be more than it is capable of handling. This can cause damage to whatever cable, hub, PC, or charger you connect to it,” Benson concluded.
