Anonymous takes down two Japanese airport websites in protest of illegal dolphin killings . Hackers affiliated with the notorious Anonymous collective have launched a series of DDoS attacks on the websites of two major airports in Japan, according to JapanToday . The attacks took place on October 10 and targeted Tokyo ’s Narita Airport and Nagoya Chubu Airport . Both websites were down for about eight hours, but flights were not affected. According to Japanese authorities, the DDoS attacks were announced in advance by Anonymous ’ Twitter account a day earlier. The attacks escalated in the following days and continued until last weekend, with other websites also targeted. Later victims included the Japan National Tourism Organization, the Japan Fishermen’s Association, and the city of Taiji (Wakayama Prefecture). The website of the Taiji municipality was targeted again in early September with DDoS attacks. The city had gained negative notoriety in the documentary The Cove as a place where dolphins were herded into a small cove and slaughtered en masse by Japanese fishermen. Around the same time, the hacker activist collective's campaigns #OpSeaWorld and #OpKillingBay also launched denial of service attacks on the Sochi Aquarium website about the capture of whales from the ocean, as well as other sites in Denmark, Iceland and France, for various reasons related to animal abuse.
