There has been discussion about the possibility that the cyber attack against the German Parliament was coordinated by Russian – state-backed – hackers, who spread a particularly sophisticated malware within the Federal Parliament's network.

The consequences of the data breach could be serious for the German government, with German media reporting that the Bundestag may have to replace 20,000 computers following the breach, an action that could cost millions of euros.

New revelations from the investigation confirm that the cyber attack on the German Federal Parliament began with the exposure of Chancellor Angela Merkel's personal computer.

According to the German news agency, Bild, Merkel's computer was one of the first systems to be infected with the malware used by the hackers.

The attackers used Merkel's PC to target other members of Parliament by sending malicious messages, while so far there is no news on how the attackers managed to breach Merkel's systems.

Despite evidence suggesting Russian hackers were involved in the attack, security experts have stressed that attributing responsibility in these hacks is very difficult. And many other governments could be interested in hacking the systems in the German Bundestag.
