Focus Bari: Greeks spend 2.5 hours a day on the Internet – The Internet is becoming an increasingly integral part of the daily life of Greeks, as seven out of ten use it, a rate of 70.9% (compared to 69.7% a quarter earlier).
Two and a half hours a day is the average time Greeks spend on the Internet, according to data from Focus Bari's Web ID survey.
In more detail, there seems to be an upward trend in terms of time consumed, despite the economic crisis, as today the average duration of use reaches 141 minutes, while three months ago this time was 135.
According to a relevant post on the SEPE website, men dedicate 146 minutes to online browsing, on average, with women following with 135 minutes.
The average daily Internet use increases at younger ages, as young people aged 18-24 spend 187 minutes online and those aged 13-17 spend 143 minutes online.
Internet use is also increasing among older people: for example, the average time spent on the Internet is 105 minutes for the 65-74 age group and 110 minutes for those aged 55-64.
More generally, according to the Focus Bari survey, the Internet is becoming an increasingly integral part of the everyday life of Greeks, as seven out of ten, 70.9% (compared to 69.7% a quarter earlier), now use the Internet.
In fact, more than six in ten, 62.2% (up from 60.4% in the previous quarter), connect on a daily basis.
Especially among young people, usage is skyrocketing, since young people aged 13-17 use the Internet at a rate of 97.4% (90.8% daily), while among those aged 18-24 the corresponding rate is 97.8% (94.9% daily).
Focus Bari data shows that Thessaloniki now hosts the highest Internet penetration rates with 78.5% (up from 73.7% in the October-December quarter of 2014). The prefecture of Attica follows with a percentage of 76.6%, and the rest of Greece is – on average – at 62.7%.
Focus Bari's data for the 1st quarter of the year confirms the Greeks' shift to mobile devices as a means of connecting to the Internet.
Specifically, the access devices that are now used for browsing the Internet are the laptop with a percentage of 42.2% (from 43.3% a year earlier), the mobile phone with 35.3% from 27.4% in March 2014, the desktop computer with 29.8% from 33.3% in 2014. They are followed by the tablet with 12.8% from 7.7% in March 2014, while a very small percentage, 0.9%, from 0.7%, connects via a smart TV device.
Facebook is the social network with the most users in Greece, as the percentage of those who have an account on the popular website stands at 50.9% for the 1st quarter of 2015 (up from 48.3% in the last quarter of 2014).
Overall, Greek Internet users give a strong vote of confidence to social media, with more than one in two, 55.2%, now using social media. Especially in the 18-44 age group, usage increases to 68.6%.
After Facebook, second in the preferences of Greeks comes Google+ with 11.8% (up from 9.2% a quarter earlier), followed by Youtube with 11.5% (up from 8.7%), with Twitter following with 8.3% (up from 7.5%) and Instagram following with 8.1%. The average time spent on social media is 82.2% per day (up from 77.9 minutes in the last quarter of 2014).
