May 14-17: The 1st Science Festival at TIF – dedicated to technology/innovation
Is there an algorithm that determines sexual attraction and explains the process of flirting? Can a woman make a man "hers" in six ways? "Yes, there is," answers doctor Konstantinos Peristeris, in a different speech that he will present at the Thessaloniki Science Festival, classifying flirting among the sciences!
However, if someone has found their other half and is not interested in… “536 techniques that will make a woman go crazy for him,” they can choose from dozens of other topics that present science differently and explain it in simple terms. They can learn, for example, the relationship between the way we watch a movie and our dreams, how a crime is solved and what exactly stardust is, assemble robots, or learn about how a rainbow is created.
From May 14 to 17, at the Thessaloniki International Fair (pavilion 8), a Science Festival dedicated to science, technology and innovation will change the way one sees the world around them and will answer many basic questions. At least, this is what the organizers who brought the Science Festival to Northern Greece for the first time claim (two other Science Festivals have preceded it, in Athens).
The festival's themes can be attended by children from five years old and adults. The planetarium of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and the mobile planetarium Starlab will organize screenings with themes drawn from Greek mythology, the sky, the measurement of time and more.
"We want to highlight science in Northern Greece, with the hope that next year, the Science Festival will spread and will have participation - why not - from neighboring Balkan countries," pointed out Theodoros Anagnostopoulos, director of the Science Communication organization (SciCo) and co-organizer of the Science Festival.
"Our goal is to highlight youth," emphasized Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris and underlined that "such events generate synergies and this, in my opinion, is the most important thing of all.".
In fact, he stressed that he will seek to legally regulate the issue of banners and selectively allow the advertising of such large festivals in the city center under specific conditions.
"Across Europe, when there is a celebration or such an event, cities are decorated and the events are advertised," noted TIF - HELEXPO CEO Kyriakos Pozrikidis, welcoming the mayor's move. Furthermore, he added that two of the organization's main goals are to remain "alive" with activities throughout the year and "to make young people love the Fair as much as the older ones.".
The Deputy Mayor of Tourism, International Relations and E-Government of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, Spyros Pegas, spoke about the contribution of these actions to the city's extroversion, internationalization and opening up to the Balkan countries. "Every kind of festival, whether artistic or scientific, attracts its own audience and creates mobility at all levels," he noted.
Admission to the 1st Thessaloniki Science Festival is free. It is organized by the British Council and the Educational Organization "Science Communication - SciCo" together with the Municipality of Thessaloniki, HELEXPO - TIF, the General Secretariat for Research and Technology, and the WE Sports and Culture Center, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, Education and Religious Affairs, the General Secretariat for Research and Technology and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Also participating are the Union of Greek Physicists, University Institutions, Educational Organizations, Research and Technological Institutes, as well as the largest public and private bodies in Thessaloniki.
