New major OTA update released for Ubuntu Touch

Canonical has finally released a third OTA update for Ubuntu Touch and users should start receiving it within the next few hours.

Ubuntu developers have been working on this update for quite some time and it was already delayed for a few days due to some minor issues. In any case, the new update has been released and Ubuntu Touch users, including Bq phone owners, should receive it soon.Ubuntu Touch

In addition to the numerous fixes and improvements implemented in this latest update, Canonical is also implementing a small change to the way OTA updates will be distributed. Starting with this release, OTA updates will be phased in, meaning they won't be available to everyone at once. An increasing number of users will receive them, and over the course of just one day, they will be available to everyone.

Now that users are using Ubuntu phones, developers need to be extra careful. They need to make sure that if a bug slips through the testing process, it doesn't hit everyone at once, hence the need to roll out updates gradually.

“We have also mentioned that this update is the first to be rolled out in a phased manner. This means that the update will initially be rolled out over a 24-hour period, with each ‘step’ showing the update as available to more and more people until it eventually appears on all devices. This is a safety measure that gives us time to pull the update in the very unlikely event that a critical issue is reported, ensuring that not all devices suddenly experience a problem. Of course, we have ensured that this cannot happen, but we prefer to be extra safe,” wrote Łukasz 'sil2100' Zemczak.

Developers are now working to stabilize the Vivid based version of Ubuntu Touch and new major updates, with new features, are expected in the coming months.
