LG software disables Windows UAC

Windows UAC

German developer Christopher Bachner claims that LG software disables User Account Control (UAC), putting Windows at risk of malware infection.

User Account Control was first introduced with the unnamed Windows Vista and has been available on all newer Microsoft platforms since then. UAC increases security by restricting applications from accessing user privileges unless the administrator allows it.

According to Microsoft, "even if you use an administrator account, changes cannot be made to your computer without your knowledge, which can help prevent malware and spyware. Also, no changes can be made from an installation to your computer."

Bachner says that this protection is silently disabled by LG's software in an effort to make the user experience smoother.

“This is extremely dangerous, as applications that shouldn’t be run with administrator privileges are run with administrator privileges. For example, my browser ran with full administrator privileges every time,” Bachner says.
“I was angry because I would expect more from such a large company.”
“The only solution to this is to uninstall the LG software and re-enable UAC.”

Disabling UAC affects all home users. System administrators, of course, have other ways to restrict access to administrator accounts because direct Windows can be the last step in preventing malware .

But inexperienced users are at risk because with UAC disabled, malware writers literally have a party on their computers.
