New app from Google translate.
Google hopes that the new Translate service will manage to «break» the language barriers once and for all, with the addition of a voice translation service.
The latest update of the automatic translation service provides instant translation of voice commands in many languages, which means that user-travelers will be able, for example, to communicate more comfortably with waiters, hotel staff, and other services at their destination.
The new service works somewhat like a real-time interpreter, allowing travelers to converse with someone who speaks an entirely different language.
The updated service also features a camera-based translation function, which translates words that appear within images, allowing users to decode… incomprehensible signs on the road, menus in restaurants, etc., simply by holding the smartphone’s camera over the text they want to translate.
However, there are also some limitations, writes Chloe Hamilton in the Independent. Although the chat function currently works in 38 different languages, the image translation service is available only in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
