A federal judge in Washington has dismissed a $30,000 fine against Internet users accused of downloading a movie via BitTorrent. The judge ruled that the production company did not suffer significant damages and that the fine would be excessive in this case.

For several years now, several Internet users in America have been accused and sued for downloading copyrighted material such as movies and music.
The goal of these lawsuits is more to scare users who download movies illegally, and quite often, the rights companies proceed with legal proceedings against such users, after they have been identified by their ISPs. If the defendant does not stop and comply, then the rights companies ask for some exemplary punishment to be imposed. They succeed in this in several cases.
