Twitter allows sending links in direct messages again

Twitter has re-enabled sending links (URLs) through its private messaging service , months after it had disabled it .

The micro-blogging site said the link ban was due to a surge in spammy links being sent to Twitter accounts. Last year, sources within the company said there was a wave of compromised accounts that ultimately led to a massive increase in spamming via Direct Messages. The aim was to trick users into following links and entering personal information that ended up with the spammers.

One of the company's executives received such a direct message, which led the company to ban such messages until the issue could be properly addressed. Unfortunately, it took more than a year to resolve the issue, causing outrage among users.

Replacing dots within links with the word "dot" and breaking up links with spaces has become a common practice among those who did not wish to send messages through other tools or in public posts.

There is a message on Twitter's support page stating that the company was upgrading its infrastructure. Now that the project is complete, users can send URLs to their Twitter friends.
