Students from the Department of Medicine of the School of Health Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki are contributing to the enrichment of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, through an innovative teaching method that is being applied for the fourth consecutive year, within the framework of the Medical Education course.
More than 50 articles by Greek students of the Medical Education course at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki have been included in Wikipedia, as the students' work involves translating medical terms into Greek, which are then incorporated into Greek medical terminology. Students form groups of two or three people to work on the same term, resulting in better quality of the translated terms.
The effort follows the guidelines of the Wikipedia Education Program and is an important milestone for the future expansion and operation of similar programs in other schools and universities in Greece, with the aim of modernizing and improving education. The above effort is being carried out in collaboration with the Greek Wikimedia Community User Group Greece and the Greek Wikipedia.
Wikipedia is a collaborative encyclopedic project established on the Internet. It is global, innovative and multilingual and aims to provide freely reusable content, with objective and verifiable data, that anyone can modify and improve.
As part of the Medical Education course tomorrow (November 20, 2014) from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, two lectures will be held at the Grand Amphitheater of the Department of Medicine of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki on the following topics:
* "Medical education and Wikipedia" with the speaker being the Administrator of the Greek Wikipedia, Kostas Stamboulis.
* Medical Encyclopedias in the era of the semantic web: the meaning of DBpedia", with speaker Charalambos Bratsas, Advisor to the Semantic Web Unit of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and president of the Open Knowledge Foundation – Greece.
