Symantec: Virtualization has been gaining ground in enterprises in recent years, offering attractive opportunities for scalability, efficiency and flexibility.
According to a survey by Forrester Research, over 70 percent of businesses plan to virtualize their servers by the end of 2015.
Companies often delay virtualization implementation because of security concerns or move to virtualization before implementing advanced security measures. However, virtual machines and mainframes are not immune to attacks.
The adoption of virtualization technology in an enterprise creates new attack risks that must be addressed, such as monitoring of virtual networks between virtual machines. There is malware specifically designed to compromise virtual machines and attacks that directly target central servers.
About 18 percent of malware detects virtual machines and stops running when it encounters one of them.

For the most part, these concerns apply to both hosted hypervisors installed on a pre-existing operating system and bare-metal hypervisors that do not require an operating system.
