Silk Road 2was the replacement for the notorious online drug market that was shut down in October 2013. According to information from TheVerge, the FBIand the US Department of Homeland Security managed to shut down Silk Road 2. The hidden website and its forum stopped working, and now a page with the FBI logo appears.
In a public statement, the FBI said it had arrested administrator Blake Benthall (“Defcon”) in California on Wednesday. Benthall, 26, allegedly had “control and oversight over all of Silk Road 2 since December 2013, a month after the site went live.” He is charged with conspiracy, drug trafficking, wire fraud, forgery, and money laundering from drug trafficking.
According to the FBI, Silk Road 2 had about 150,000 active users and was generating $8 million in sales per month as of September 2014. The website was shut down after an undercover agent was able to infiltrate the site and gain access to administrative functions. They were in regular contact with Benthall, who had betrayed his trust. If convicted, Benthall faces up to life in prison.
