In three to five years from now, the first vehicles equipped with a "smart" device that will... wake up distracted drivers will be on the roads.
The largest American automaker in terms of sales, General Motors, had the idea of building the first cars that would take care of bringing drivers back to order in the event that they are distracted, either because their cell phone rings or because they remembered - this applies to women - that they need to fix the makeup they left halfway through when they were at home.
According to the “Financial Times”, the vehicles that are preparing to make their maiden appearance on the market from 2017 to 2019 are equipped with an advanced technology system that will detect eye and head movement and consequently identify distracted drivers.
According to the British newspaper, the patent belongs to the Australian group “Seeing Machines”, based in London.
Recently, the group signed a collaboration with the safety product manufacturer "Takata", which will supply General Motors with smart technological systems.
In the next three to five years, at least 500,000 vehicles will have this tracking device integrated.
These devices will be able to measure head movements and sound the alarm to drivers if they are not paying attention to the road or are not consulting their mirrors.
The next step for the scientists, according to a company announcement, is to develop the device that will be able to wake up drowsy drivers who are at risk of falling asleep while driving. For ardent supporters of the technology, these devices are expected to be particularly useful, while for its critics, the new technology raises questions regarding the protection of privacy.
Questions mainly focus on how manufacturers and insurers will manage the data, although the devices will not store or transmit information, at least in this first stage.
