Security never takes a break, which is why ESET, on the occasion of the arrival of the summer holidays, presents a series of important tips. Since even in distant destinations, users do not part with their smartphones and tablets, the company presents basic steps to stay safe and "surf" undisturbed.
1. Update the operating systems of your devices, install patches, make backups and ensure that the security software is updated before you leave for vacation, as it is possible that the low speeds of Wi-Fi and 3G/4G in tourist destinations can leave you exposed.
2. Install anti-theft software on your devices, so that even if they are lost or stolen, the chances of finding them are increased.
3. Protect with passwords and encrypt any devices you take with you on vacation. In this way, you protect your personal data in case your device is lost.
4. Turn off Bluetooth, mobile data, NFC and Wi-Fi on tablets and smartphones when you are not using them. Not only do you save battery, but you also prevent unwanted connections from other devices. You also need to be careful when using public wireless networks.
5. Upload your vacation photos and videos on a daily basis, so that even if there is a problem with your device, SD card or hard drive, you will be able to keep your summer memories alive.
6. If you are staying at a hotel that offers storage services (e.g. a safe), take advantage of them to secure devices, storage cards and even removable hard drives. If there is a password lock option, even better.
7. If you need to use storage media (memory cards, USB sticks) on shared computers, don't forget to check them as soon as they are returned to your computers. Check that the autorun and autoplay functions are disabled and be prepared to format the media, if necessary.
8. Be careful when charging devices, as not all outlets are secure. It is better to carry an AC adapter or an extra battery, and avoid connecting via USB, which leaves devices exposed to data theft or the installation of unwanted programs.
