Myspace shames users with old photos to win them back

Myspace wants you back – even if it requires a little "blackmail. "

The social network is sending emails to users with old photos of themselves, hoping to entice them to return to Myspace. The emails include one or two old photos and a line that says, “The good, the rad and the what were you thinking…” along with a link that takes users to their profile.

In other words: Remember us on Myspace? We still have embarrassing photos of you.

It's a smart approach to retaining members (or at least piquing their curiosity). After all, few things will grab your attention like the reminder that a tech company still has your old photos on file, even decades old.

However, it's unclear whether the strategy is working. When asked if the photos had increased engagement on Myspace, which was revamped and relaunched to users in January 2013, a spokesperson told Mashable, "Myspace is reaching out to new and old users to re-engage them on the network through a personal experience."

Myspace has 15 billion user photos in its database and appears to be popular with music fans. Facebook, by comparison, announced in September that it has 250 billion photos in its database.

So keep an eye on your old inbox for a message from Myspace. You might have some digital "cleansing" to add to your list.
