There is good news for all the security researchers, Penetration testers and Hackers. The developers of one of the most advanced open source operating systems for penetration testing, “KALI Linux” have announced the release of the latest version of Kali Linux 1.0.7 with some interesting features.

Kali Linux is an open source Debian-based distribution for penetration testing and electronic credentials, sponsored by Offensive Security, a world-class organization for information security training and security auditing services.

Earlier this year, Offensive Security released Kali Linux 1.0.6 with Kernel version 3.12 and also added the Self Destruct feature that allows Kali users to encrypt the entire hard drive to make data inaccessible in case of an emergency by entering a secret password at boot time.

This latest version of Kali Linux 1.0.7 adds a similar feature to the previous version, along with many new hacking and penetration testing. The new version includes the most stable Linux kernel version, namely 3.14 with bug fixes, performance improvements, and hardware support.

The most interesting feature added to the latest Kali Linux release is “Live USB persistence encryption,” which allows the creation of a bootable Kali Linux with persistent encryption of part of the USB drive, enabling the secure storage of changes to the USB drive even after rebooting.

Kali Linux now offers two such options in the boot menu, as shown. One is “encrypted USB persistence partition” and the other is “unencrypted persistence partition”.

This was one of the most anticipated features that now allows security experts and hackers to keep their data, custom scripts, and favorite hacking tools organized in Kali Linux on bootable USB Sticks.

If you already have Kali installed on your system, then there is no need to download and install the latest update again. Instead, you can use the following commands to upgrade to Kali 1.0.7:

apt-get update

apt-get dist-upgrade

# If you've just updated your kernel, then:

Reboot

The new release also includes ARM image scripts, and the team has promised to provide some additional virtual machine images and custom ARM images in the near future.
