Fast Internet on the… moon? NASA and MIT have been saying, for a long time, yes!

Hmm… Think about it. What would you need to move to the… moon forever ? Food, water, and air, for sure. But what else might not be necessary for your survival, but you use it every day? Think about it. Yes, we mean the Internet.

And for this last point, a team of researchers from MIT and NASA have been trying for some time to prove that such a form of high-speed connectivity is not at all impossible, as we had already written to you last October.

The two organizations have carried out the relevant tests , proving that data transfer can be carried out at particularly high speeds , just like on Earth, and in... space, allowing large-scale data transmissions and even high-quality video streaming, with the help of laser beams .

To achieve the relevant connection, the capabilities of four separate "telescopes", which are located at a ground "terminal" station in New Mexico, which can send the "signal" to the moon.

The team achieved data transfer, at the distance of 384,633 kilometers between the earth and the moon, at a rate of 19.44mbps, also managing to download data at a rate of 622mbps. Communicating at high data rates is difficult, as data loss or connection dropout can occur along the way, due to the difficult conditions in the atmosphere and the great distance. This is the reason for using four different telescopes to increase the chances of a problem-free connection. However, in any case, data transfer via laser has managed to break the previous record for relevant transmission via radio waves by a long way .

NASA and MIT will present their findings at the CLEO conference in California on June 9, proving that even the… interplanetary Internet may not be far away after all. Next stop, Mars?
