Google has lost another important member of its team and leader of its “Deep Learning” machine learning project, Andrew Ng. The Stanford professor, who specializes in artificial intelligence , appears to be heading to Baidu, the company behind the most popular Chinese search engine.

The controversial “Deep Learning” project, also known as “Google Brain”, is a machine learning initiative that seeks to make the use of computers more efficient and capable of mimicking the way the human brain works and processes information.

According to a Wired report, Chinese giant Baidu plans to invest around $300 million in deep learning and big data – which is why it has called on Andrew Ng to lead the project.

Information indicates that Baidu first approached the Google researcher in March 2013 in Beijing, and several meetings followed over the course of the past year, until the two sides reached a definitive agreement.

Ng will lead the company's Sunnyvale lab, as well as a Beijing-based research and development center focused on deep learning and big data, i.e. projects for analyzing large amounts of information.
