The University of Rostock in Germany plans to award an honorary doctorate to Edward Snowden, the former NSA employee who in 2013 revealed the United States' secret surveillance program.
Academic staff at the University of Rostock believe that Snowden contributed to the dissemination of knowledge about this and was nominated for the title of honorary doctorate.
The university's senate has voted in favor of this honorary distinction by more than three-quarters. However, its proclamation has not yet been finalized.
Snowden is extremely popular in Germany, following the revelations he made about American secret surveillance, which also resulted in surveillance against Angela Merkel.
