Pinterest first announced Promoted Pins , or Pin ads, in September 2013, which have since been tested without payment to find the right format and placement .
Today, we learn that Pinterest is expected to soon earn its first advertising revenue , as Promoted Pins are expanding to a small group of businesses, such as ABC Family, General Mills, Nestle, Walt Disney, etc., which will see their paid Pins appear in Pinterest search results and categories on web and mobile
Pinterest is very careful with ads and has not yet placed them on users’ homepage, which is the first page they visit after logging into the Social Network. Also, sponsored Pins are not easily distinguishable from organic Pins, except for the “Promoted Pin” sign at the bottom. If the user stays on the Pin images, sponsored Pins go unnoticed.
If the new tests go well for Pinterest, then over time the ads will be made available to more advertisers.
