Small green energy producers will be given the opportunity to form cooperatives in a dynamic manner and participate in the free market and sale of energy, through a new business model
Cosmote is participating in the Vimsen research project, with the aim of implementing an innovative
platform through which cooperatives of small "green" energy producers will shape the smart energy networks of the future, contributing to the promotion of renewable energy sources and environmental protection.
By leveraging Information and Communication Technologies, the project seeks to upgrade
the conventional operation of the electricity system. The project envisages that small producers of green energy (e.g. household consumer-producers) will be given the opportunity to form cooperatives in a dynamic manner and participate in the free market and sale of energy, through a new business model. The aim is to save energy, reduce the cost of electricity, balance production-load and, of course, protect the environment, by increasing the penetration of renewable energy sources compared to conventional production units.
Within the framework of the project, Cosmote participates in the definition of use cases,
technical requirements, system specifications and its overall evaluation, while it is also responsible for defining the architecture, which concerns the support of communications. Furthermore, the company will contribute to the exploitation of the results of the research project, as well as to the formation of the new business model.
The Vimsen project (https://www.ict-vimsen.eu/) also includes the Diophantus Institute of Computer Technology and Publishing, the Public Power Corporation, the companies KEMA Nederland BV, INTELEN, TELINT and WATTICS, as well as an association of municipal districts from Italy, where part of the experiments for the evaluation of the pilot platform in real environmental conditions will be carried out.
The project is co-financed by the EU through the 7th Framework Programme and has a total duration of three years.
