Anonymous has once again launched massive attacks against Philippine government websites in protest of a controversial provision in the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. The controversial provision on online defamation has sparked intense criticism, as it is alleged to infringe on freedom of speech.
Among the websites attacked by Anonymous were the websites of the National Telecommunications Commission, the Anti-Piracy Center, the DOST Information Network, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, the Philippine Embassy in Rome, the PNP Command Center, and the website of the Vice President of the Government. The websites of various cities and municipalities were also compromised as part of the campaign.
According to hacktivists, the controversial provision of the bill abolishes people's right to freely express their opinions and kills freedom of speech via the internet
“This is our way of expressing ourselves and opposing this bill, which could destroy the future of the internet in the Philippines. We believe that together we will achieve our goal. We will fight for the right of Filipino citizens to freedom of speech and expression,” the hackers stressed.
These attacks were carried out by hacktivists after the country's Supreme Court ruled that this provision was constitutional.
