In an era where communication seems to spring from the screens of smartphones and tablets, people with visual impairments are probably not particularly favored.
This concern was raised by American researchers from the Fluid Interfaces Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and they developed the FingerReader: a reading ring that allows blind people to play information on… their fingers.
Information at your fingertips
The hi-tech accessory is worn on the user's index finger and narrates in a male voice the text that the user points to each time. For example, when the user places their finger on the page of a book, on the surface of a tablet or an ebook, moving it to the right, the reading ring scans the text, translating the characters into voice.
With the help of special software, FingerReader tells the story that slowly unfolds before the reader. In order for the user to maintain the correct path with their finger, the reading "tool" has a vibration so that they can easily understand, for example, that they have moved away from the point of the text.
The FingerReader, according to scientists, could in the future replace existing reading systems that are aimed at people with visual impairments and often offer limited capabilities while presenting inaccuracies during their operation.
The easy-to-use device is still in the development stage. The researchers say there are still some "flaws" that need improvement, such as the speed of reading, the fact that it is wired, etc.
