Security researchers at Bkav Internet Security are warning that 3 of the top 10 search results for “Flappy Bird” on Google point to fake or malicious versions of the app.
According to experts, users are mainly redirected to websites in Vietnam, the homeland of the creator of Flappy Bird, or to Russian websites.
In several cases, cybercriminals have tampered with the game code and inserted malicious code into it. Many of the modified versions are designed to automatically send SMS messages through infected devices to premium-rate numbers.
Furthermore, Bkav points out that the number of fake versions of Flappy Bird has increased significantly since the game's creator, Nguyen Ha Dong, announced its withdrawal from the Apple Store and Google Play online stores.
