Ads are now officially making their appearance on Apple Maps , as Apple has begun rolling them out to iPhone and iPad users in the United States and Canada . The change marks another step for the company in expanding its advertising business, this time in an app that until now has focused primarily on finding places, businesses and services.

Where ads appear
New listings can appear when a user searches Maps or browses the “Suggested Places” section. Their visibility is linked to keywords that businesses have chosen as part of their advertising campaigns.

In practice, a paid listing can be placed at the top of the results, so that it has greater visibility than organic suggestions. Apple limits the appearance to one ad per result set, thus attempting to avoid turning the search results into a purely commercial list.
The advertising indication is visible and the blue "Ad" markingso that the user can distinguish the paid listing from the rest of the results.
Apple had announced the change
The company had already revealed its plans for advertising in Apple Maps back in March, specifying that the service would gradually begin rolling out towards the end of the summer. The first indications had appeared earlier this year, when reports of it were found in versions of iOS.
In August, Apple also opened up the ability for businesses to buy advertising space on Maps, offering initial incentives for participation, including a 15% credit for future advertising spend, in an effort to attract early advertisers.
The rollout isn't ending abruptly. The ads began appearing to users in recent days, and Apple is expected to gradually increase their presence over the coming weeks.
There is no off switch
One of the points that will likely cause reactions is that users do not have an option to disable these ads within the Maps app.

Apple, however, maintains that the commercial activity is designed with privacy. According to the company, interactions with ads on Maps are not linked to a user's Apple Account and the related data is not shared with third parties.

This approach is particularly important, as Apple Maps is an application that can reveal strong indications of what someone is looking for or needs. Searching for a restaurant, a hotel, or a specific service can create a particularly sensitive context. For this reason, Apple is attempting to separate advertising targeting from the user's personal profile.
What can businesses advertise?
Apple doesn't open its platform to all types of advertising. Its policy excludes, among other things, promotional listings for home services, bail bonds services, and cryptocurrency ATMs.
Ads related to medical services are reviewed differently and may be approved on a case-by-case basis. All listings must comply with Apple's general advertising.
A new field for Apple
The introduction of ads to Apple Maps is not just a small change to the look of the app. For Apple, it creates another space where it can connect businesses with consumers at the exact moment of commercial intent.

If someone is searching for a coffee shop, a garage, or a store, the ad appears in a context where the need has already been expressed. This makes Maps a particularly attractive advertising channel, as the value of a view can be greater than that of a general online ad.

Time will tell if Apple will expand the model to other markets. For now, the US and Canada serve as the first major testing ground, while the gradual increase in advertising will be an important indicator of how the company's new strategy will evolve.
