FLiPP: LG's new OLED technology that changes everything

LG Display has unveiled a revolutionary new OLED manufacturing method called FLiPP (FMM-Less innovative Pixel Patterning) that promises to fundamentally change the way displays . technology addresses some of the most persistent limitations of traditional OLED production, delivering significantly improved brightness, lifespan and energy efficiency. According to LG Display, it is “thenext-generation OLED that is the ultimate dream.”

FLiPP: LG's new OLED technology

Traditional RGB OLED relies on the use of a fine metal mask (FMM) — a metal plate with tiny holes for the stencil-like deposition of light-emitting materials to form the pixel pattern. This process is expensive, time-consuming, and presents serious problems in larger panels, where the mask can become distorted or misaligned. The result is limited flexibility in screen size, a smaller aperture ratio, and increased production costs. LG Display is addressing these issues with a completely different approach.

With the FLiPP, RGB pixels are sequentially placed on the panel and then photolithography and ultraviolet (UV) radiation to remove unnecessary parts — without any metal mask.

FLiPP: The technical advantages of the new OLED technology

The figures presented by LG Display are impressive. Compared to traditional FMM displays under the same conditions, FLiPP technology achieves 1.6 times higher brightness, 2.4 times longer lifespan, and a 13% reduction in power consumption. In addition, the aperture ratio increases by approximately 55% compared to FMM-based methods. These improvements are not just numbers on a lab paper — they represent practical changes that users will feel in their daily experience.

The 1.6x increase in brightness means that the displays will be easier to read in bright light, while the longer lifespan addresses one of the most critical drawbacks of OLED technology : brightness degradation and burn-in . This has always been a barrier to OLED adoption in applications where the display remains on for long periods of time, such as office monitors, digital signage or car displays. The 13% reduction in power consumption is also significant, especially for portable devices such as tablets and laptops.

One of the most promising features of FLiPP is its freedom from size and resolution limitations. LG Display says the method can be applied to almost all displays, as well as VR and AR that require extremely high pixel density. This flexibility is something that the traditional FMM method could not offer, as the deformation of the metal mask on large panels was an insurmountable obstacle.

LG Display said it will start by applying the new technology to “IT applications” such as tablets and monitors, before expanding to very large TVs and wearable devices. However, no production start date or availability of the first products has been announced yet.

In summary, LG Display ’s FLiPP technology represents one of the most significant steps in the evolution of OLED displays in recent years. This method could be a game-changer for TVs, monitors, tablets, wearables and VR/AR applications. The next critical step is moving from demonstration to stable, economically viable mass production — and that will determine whether FLiPP truly becomes the “OLED technology of the future” that LG Display promises .
